What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitisation & Refocussing (EMDR) Therapy

Was discovered by Francine Shapiro in the late 80's when she noticed the desensitisation effect of spontaneous eye movement. Since then the method has established itself as a very effective therapy for those who've experienced trauma, complex trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

The mind often heals itself naturally, much of this healing happens during sleep through REM (rapid eye movement). Using this natural process EMDR has been used effectively to treat a wide range of emotional and mental health conditions.

What can EMDR be used for?

In addition to it's use for the treatment of PTSD, EMDR in conjunction with counselling has been successfully used to treat:

  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Anger
  • Phobias
  • Depression
  • Grief and loss
  • Dependancy
  • Performance anxiety
  • Low self-esteem
